Is ‘Looking For a Hobby’ the Right Hobby for Me?

I’ve decided to participate in NaBloPoMo (say that one time fast), and the theme is “EYE”, I have been turning my eyes toward restoration.

God promises us He will restore the years the locust has eaten.

OH NO, Looks like more melancholic ruminative navel lint analysis!

No.

I’m thinking I need a hobby.

Whenever you fill out a form, it asks for hobbies.  Maybe to explain what you’re sniffing.  Maybe to establish that you CAN relax.  Maybe to see if you have a social support system.

In the whole of my life, I’ve only been able to list reading and shopping.  Well, and now blogging.  But when it’s a writing thing you’re providing information for, blogging kind of looks like, “Well, don’t whine to me if you don’t make your deadline, because you’re over there twisting off at the blog.”

To me, anyway.

Okay, blogging.

I used to list cross stitch, because I was trying to be someone else, and one day, realized I wasn’t good at it and when I had a choice, I read or went shopping.

Shopping is not as fun now, because I have a mortgage.

I have a  mug collection, but this is also waning because there are two ways to add…travel and adding unique and beautiful.  A mug used to cost $6.  Unique and beautiful is running…$27-56.  For a mug(see paragraph above).

I have a cookbook collection, but I haven’t treated it like a collection.  They’re strung from one end of the house to another.  I’ve had in my head to move them to their own bookshelf in the kitchen.  It seems to have some natural limitations.  If it’s a hobby, I shouldn’t spill gravy on it.  If I am going to use them, do they count as a collection in the hobby sense of the word?

What are my options?:

Birdwatching (It’s inexpensive and we live in a great area. I wear my pants too low on my hips; they wouldn’t let me in the club),

Stamp Collecting (It’s probably going to get more lucrative as people stop mailing things and if they must, print stamps at their home printer) [Yeah, not going to happen],

Rock Collecting (Again, with the trousers.),

Historical Re-enactment (I can’t think of one thing in the world I would less like to do on a formal basis.  Which is not to be confused with a little of the informal kind that I do with the husband and children. Just kidding.  I’m on the blog, it’s where we act functional.),

Sharp Cheese Club (no, it exists. It’s like Mensa.  I’m not quite smart enough to get in.),

Scrapbooking,

Cake Decorating (too much cake batter implied.  Did I tell you the one about the open cake mix on the counter?  The one I’d just take a spoonful of when I was stressed[when the twins started walking]? So, no.),

Rock Climbing (Let me check with the Physical Ther-ah…hahahahahahaha. Ha.),

Knitting (Meh.),

China Painting (Words I’ve never said before, but…I’m too young.),

HEY!  Wait.  I’ve always been interested in calligraphy.  Like this.

Hiking (I’ve looked into this; it’s a fancy word for walking uphill. They sell sticks.  Sticks.).

The harder I try to think of something, the less I can come up with.

What about you?  What hobbies do you love?  Which ones mystify you?

No disrespect intended to rock collectors and birdwatchers. I used to have a friend who was a rock collector.  I actually love watching birds.  High waists are the thing for Fall.  Oops. Sorry.

  1. This is so funny Maggie! LOVE IT!

Hobbies, hobbie, who’s got the hobby! Ha! Mine have changed over the years and the fun thing about a hobby is that you can do it for a long time or a short time. Whatever it is it must be enjoyable: hobby = happy.

Anyway my one and forever hobby is horseback riding. I don’t get to do it as much as I like but I make sure I get out to the barn once a week. 🙂

Mine is reading as well. Sometimes I lie and put down gardening so reading will not look lonely.

My boss is a birdwatcher. I laughed out loud at that part.

  3. Definitely reading and writing. They are both free and help me relax a lot.

Ugh…just picturing high waisted pants gave me a wedgie. 😉

I love it when you sass me. Please leave a comment.
